Dry AMD characterized by a blurry vision, CTL infiltration and amyloid deposition (drusen) precedes the wet form of the disease (wet AMD) characterized by vision loss, extensive VEGF production by microglia resulting in choroidal hypervascularization (and bleeding)
200M diagnosed patients worldwide: 180M with dry AMD (80M patients in Europe and America) and 20M with wet AMD
No effective treatments available for dry AMD. Monthly injections with anti-VEGF antibodies is the Standard of Care for wet AMD (treatment doesn’t stop inflammation)
